CD RELEASE INFO :

'Yule Like This' (pms10102)
Peter Smith Quartet
[jazz instrumental, vocal]
November 7 2000

'Yule Like This' is the latest release from saxophonist Peter Smith.
Doubling on flute and clarinet, Peter is a graduate of the jazz program at UofT ('95) and former student at Humber College. His combos can be heard at clubs and special events in southern Ontario.

While definitely seasonal in flavour, the songs recorded in August of 2000 are not all Christmas tunes. Titles like Jobim's Look To The Sky, Thad Jones' A Child Is Born and the haunting Nature Boy may inspire sentiments associated with the season while classics like O Tannenbaum and Santa Claus is Coming to Town are as green and red as you can get. Mr. Grinch is also here, as is Little Drummer Boy, but maybe not the way you expect to hear them. Also included are three originals from the pen of the leader: a blues (Tenor Gladness), a lovely bossa (New Bossa) and an up tempo Latin number that recalls Horace Silver, Some Other Dream.

Maintaining the sense of fun the title suggests, this CD was recorded in the spirit of the season. It also has elements that are neither typically jazz nor typically seasonal. The Latin orientation found on the first CD 'Caliente & Cool' remains on several numbers while three guests each take a song: vocalist Heather Bambrick of the Beehive Singers with Baby It's Cold Outside; Mark Duggan (vibes) on Jobim's tune and Phil Manning's B3 adds some earth to Blue Christmas.

As with the last CD, all tunes were recorded live in the studio. Some remain simple arrangements for four or five players while the magic of overdub allows for others to be quite rich. As with our first recording, only acoustic instruments were used.
